It seems like every day someone is "discovering" another unintended side effect of the limit that the Federal Reserve placed on debit card transaction fees, which took effect in October. The thing about all these unexpected side effects is that they were all both predictable and described in some detail on our blog and elsewhere long before the interchange limit was enforced.

No one who was paying attention and had actually bothered to look into the numbers should be surprised. The type of situation we have here is strikingly similar to, although not quite as potentially disastrous as, the European crisis in that in both cases politicians and their advisors were cheerfully ignoring the experts' early warnings only to later declare, when it turned out that the experts had been right all along, that everyone was surprised with how events were unfolding. http://blog.unibulmerchantservices.com/another-durbin-amendment-side-effect-gets-the-limelight

I have a small convience store in a very low volume town. The fees are killing my store. With so many small purchases on plastic, im braking even if not loosing money. Im not makin a lot of profit on a fuel purchase either. Anything under a 15 dollar purchase im not makin a profit. Consumers need education on how to use cards and that would help alot. It cost them if they use a bank card at a different bank...they should know if you use a card other than the host card, it cost us "small business" owners alot of money. I hope things can look up in our future.

Good article. It is unfortunate that over the last ten years, the travel industry has already been able to to deal with terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, bird flu, swine flu, plus the first ever entire global economic downturn. Through all of it the industry has proven to be strong, resilient plus dynamic, finding new methods to deal with misfortune. There are generally fresh troubles and opportunity to which the sector must all over again adapt and answer.

Thanks for your ideas. One thing really noticed is the fact banks and financial institutions really know the spending practices of consumers plus understand that most of the people max away their cards around the vacations. They sensibly take advantage of this specific fact and then start flooding your current inbox in addition to snail-mail box by using hundreds of 0 APR credit cards offers shortly after the holiday season closes. Knowing that when you are like 98% in the American community, you'll rush at the possiblity to consolidate personal credit card debt and switch balances to 0 interest rates credit cards.
